Sibusile Xaba in Dizzy

— English version below —

‘Xaba invents a kind of weightless, free-floating global jazz that’s pitched somewhere between John Martyn’s Solid Air, Brazilian Tropicalia and the Violent Femmes. An astonishing debut from a unique talent.’ – The Guardian

Tot zijn liefhebbers behoort onder andere de Britse jazzsaxofonist Shabaka Hutchings (Sons Of Kemet, The Comet is Coming) die als gastcurator van Le Guess Who? Xaba naar Nederland haalt.

=============================================================================
A week after his performance at the Utrecht festival Le Guess Who? plays master guitarist and singer Sibusile Xaba on Saturday 17 November in the Rotterdam Jazzcafé Dizzy. An excellent opportunity to enter the intimate atmosphere of a jazz club this time in the mesmerizing music of this special South African artist. Last year, Xaba’s globally well-received double album Unlearning / Open Letter to Adoniah was released, mixing African folk and blues, flamenco and jazz in a special way. Dynamically and authentically, Xaba plucks on his acoustic guitar, supplemented with moody jazz chords. His vocals in Zulu- tongue seem to arise in a trance, in which he imitates, laughs, declaims and cries his guitar notes. An equally spiritual as playful and free sound, as if it rises above the earth and attunes to an African spirit world. ‘Xaba invents a kind of weightless, free-floating global jazz that is pitched somewhere between John Martyn’s Solid Air, Brazilian Tropicalia and the Violent Femmes. An astonishing debut from a unique talent. ‘ – The Guardian Among his fans is the British jazz saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (Sons Of Kemet, The Comet is Coming) who is the guest curator of Le Guess Who? Xaba gets to the Netherlands.

First Solo Exhibition of Lise Bisleau

Our French colleague, Lise Bisleau, is organizing her first solo exhibition at the S/ash Gallery in Worm this month. The opening will take place Sunday the 10th of June. She will be showing drawings, a wall fresco and more. Her black and white minimalistic drawings are characterised by those strange bold protagonists. Floating on the blank page, they seem to exist in a different time and space. They are experimenting through a so called body, what is agitating inside their soul. They are one, they are many, and a whole. However her poetic and fragile figures appears to stir hearts and are willing to say something about their presence.

Coming up in April…

April in Dizzy with legendary American funk drummer Jamal Thomas   On April 25 the Jamal Thomas Band will play in Dizzy. Drummer Jamal Thomas played for 18 years with Maceo Parker and made three gold records with the SOS band. He is often labeled as one of the best funk drummers in the world. This month he comes to Dizzy to present his third album Funk Do Not Move. On this he surrounds himself with the sinecure of the American funk, including the young singer and rising star Maya Lisa. On the intimate Dizzy stage, where this legendary musician will perform with full band, that will be no different. It promises to be an unforgettable evening full of tight funk, soul and oldskool R&B.

In addition, Dizzy presents another varied monthly program that ranges from swamp blues to outernational and singer-songwriter music. Below are some highlights. Los Paja Sessions (hosted by Los Paja Brava) is an eclectic, international band from Rotterdam that guarantees ‘the craziest cumbia of the northern hemisphere’. ‘If no shoes break on the dance floor then we do not consider the show to be successful,’ adds this colorful company once again delicately. The group returns to Dizzy with many successful performances behind, including Lowlands. In addition, their well-received debut album Mighty Mighty Freak’n Della Distropica’ was released in early 2017. (Saturday 7 April – 21.30)

The Congolese-Rotterdam singer-songwriter Lwela Kasulwe successfully released his debut album Nipe Suluhisho in 2016. It therefore contains a collection of warm and subdued rocking Swahili and Lingala songs. Mixed with Western singer-songwriter traditions, this leads to a unique, individual sound. His songs deal with love, life, war, injustice, hope and redemption. In Dizzy he performs his acoustic music together with a band. (Friday 13 April – 21.30)

Fulani singer Omar Ka exchanged Dakar for Rotterdam in the mid 90’s. Here he quickly ran into illustrious local musicians such as Willem Cramer and Hanyo van Oosterom. With this duo he included the masterly cross-over album H.O.W. on. Ka was always open to experiments and lent his African singing to international names such as Tony Allen, Anthony Joseph, Jon Hassell and Kain the Poet. At the same time he successfully toured the world with his more traditional Fula Band. Monthly (this month on April 6) he hosts the Dizzy evenings Around The World in One Night together with Pap Diagne. This time he hosts his own evening with many special guests from different musical backgrounds. (Friday 20 April – 21.30)

The Dutch band Fat Harry & The Fuzzy Licks sells in explosive swamp blues with the deep grooves of New Orleans funk. Frontman, singer and guitarist Fat Harry Dorth has been playing in legendary Chicago blues clubs like Buddy Guy’s legend and Kingston Mines. He jammed there with blues musicians like Joe Louis Walker, Preston Shannon, Lurrie Bell and Rip Lee Pryor. Dizzy is ready for a long evening with one of the best and most elaborate blues bands of the low countries. (Saturday 21 April – 21.30)

The well-known Rotterdam jazz café also still offers space for jazz and freely accessible jam sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays,  like this month the Bernard van Rossum Quartet (Tuesday 10 April) and Jesse Schilderink who takes musicians from Trondheim as part of a Rotterdam -Trondheim exchange program (Tuesday 17 April – 21.30).

WIJ WAREN ERBIJ @DIZZY

WIJ WAREN ERBIJ @ DIZZY

Entree is € 5,-
