Trio Harmani
Harmani [from the Persian *xarman*] – a blend of ingredients, a mixture of different flavors combined to achieve a superior taste. In *rebetika* slang, it refers to someone in need of their fix.
*Rebetika* is Greek urban music that saw its heyday in the 1930s. Originating in Greek communities in Anatolia (Turkey), it blends Anatolian and Eastern roots with Western influences. It was the music of impoverished refugees from Turkey living in the shantytowns of Athens and Piraeus; for them, it was a way to express their longing for the homelands they had left behind. It was the music of the underworld, telling stories of petty thieves, feuds, drugs, love, and poverty. Some describe the lyrics as a form of *gangsta rap avant la lettre*, while others see in them a depiction of the hardships and sorrows of life on the fringes of society. Trio Harmani performs songs spanning the entire *rebetika* era, from the underground music of the 1930s refugees to the more bohemian and socially accepted style of the 1950s.
