Afro Carib ensemble

This ensemble owes its name to the various percussion instruments that are played. These are indigenous drums and shakers that come from the winsti culture of Suriname.
This 'cult' is based on an ancient African religion in which forces from nature are worshipped. According to these rites, Mother Earth is a spiritual force that rules over all other natural elements (with the exception of the element air), which are all primordial forces in their own right. This may be the origin of 'Kawina' music in Suriname. The drums and in particular the 'Hari and Koti drone' play a key role. The timbre, but especially the traditional rhythmic figures that are played, have magical and mysterious powers.
The fusion between this traditional Kawina music with melodic Pop, Rock and the dynamics of Funk and Latin is the context in which I have written many of my compositions. Together with the Afro-Carib Ensemble, this brought about a unique transition and resulted in the release of a CD album with danceable, dynamic Kawina beats and a beautiful palette of sweet 'Suripop' ballads. The Album is aptly named 'Dansi Nanga Yu'.
