Gumbo & The Monk take you on a musical journey of discovery through the history of the Blues. From the juke joints on the cotton plantations in the Mississippi Delta to the big city blues of Detroit and Chicago.

With passionate vocals and intense (slide) guitar work they convey the authentic revive the sound of the Primal Blues. To approximate this sound as closely as possible, they make largely using guitars, cigar box guitars and guitars built (or converted) by Gumbo himself primitive tube amplifiers. In addition, both have traveled to the southern US several times to explore the origins, traditions and culture of the original Blues styles there study and experience.
Besides some traditionals, they play songs from, among others. Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed.

They tell short stories and anecdotes between the songs about blues history, the songs and the instruments used.

Gumbo & The Monk
Gumbo & The Monk nemen je mee op een muzikale ontdekkingsreis langs de geschiedenis van de Blues. Van de juke joints op de katoenplantages in de Mississippi Delta tot aan de grotestadsblues van Detroit en Chicago. Met gepassioneerde zang en intens (slide)gitaarwerk laten ze de authentieke klank van de Oer-Blues herleven. Om deze klank zo dicht mogelijk te benaderen maken zij grotendeels gebruik van door Gumbo zelf gebouwde (of verbouwde) gitaren, cigar box guitars en primitieve buizenversterkers. Daarnaast zijn beide meerdere keren naar het zuiden van de VS gereisd om daar de oorsprong, tradities en cultuur van de oorspronkelijke Blues-stijlen te onderzoeken, te bestuderen en te ervaren. Naast enkele traditionals spelen ze nummers van oa. Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker en Jimmy Reed.
