Jimmy Giuffre Tribute
Jimmy Giuffre (1921-2008) was a composer and woodwind player from the United States.
This tribute is a celebration of his music which still today sounds so simply powerful and brillant. Not many people, even between the jazz musicians, are aware of the beauty of his message, our aim is to spread it to everybody.
During this concert we will play some music from his early trio period “Jimmy Giuffre 3” (1957 Atlantic records) with Jim Hall on guitar and Ralph Pena on Bass, which was one of the most interesting bands of the West Coast.
Each song of this trio is like a child’s tale, so simply brillant, it is one of the first examples of the bond between chamber music and jazz music.
We will play then some songs from “the Jimmy Giuffre clarinet ” (1956) which is a beautiful album in which Giuffre combines the beautiful tone of his clarinet with many different instrumental ensembles.
And at last we will play some music from his other trio with Paul Bley on Piano and Steve Swallow on bass, which has been recorded by ECM in a double amazing album. This music is the summa of the musical philosophy of Jimmy Giuffre. Where simple melodic phragments are combined through the intimate interplay between the musicians.
With this tribute we aim to capture the beauty of his music and to celebrate together the life work of Jimmy Giuffre.
