Lennie Tristano Tribute
Lennie Tristano — absolute jazz legend, kind of a quiet revolutionary.
He was a pianist, composer, and teacher (1919–1978) who helped lay the groundwork for cool jazz and free improvisation, before those labels were even a thing. Blind from a young age, wildly intellectual, and totally uncompromising.
A few highlights:
🎹 Advanced harmony & counterpoint – he brought Bach-level thinking into jazz improvisation
🧠 Ahead of his time – tracks like “Intuition” and “Digression” (1949!) were fully free improvisations, years before Ornette Coleman
🧑🏫 Influential teacher – students included Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh
🎧 Cool jazz without the clichés – cerebral, linear, no bluesy excess, very focused on melodic invention
He’s sometimes criticized as being “cold” or overly academic, but if you really listen, there’s a deep emotional intensity under the surface — just very controlled.
