ModulAfro
ModulAfro is an international latin-jazz band born in Codarts and based in Rotterdam.
The project pays homage to the Afro-Cuban Jazz interpreting modern arrangements of the milestones of this music, for instance Michel Camilo’s arrangements of Mambo Inn or other groundbreaking compositions like Claudia, Bebo by Chucho Valdes, as well as original compositions.
Generally the band embrances the sonorities of the Modern Afro-Cuban Jazz, Timba Jazz and Cuban Fusion taking inspiration by bands such as Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez’s Italuba Quartet.
The sound of the band is characterized by the traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms mixed with jazz melodies and harmonies enriched by unexpected moments of interaction between the members of the band.
The project was initiated by students and alumni of the Jazz and Latin departments in Codarts. The members of the band met each other in the musical and cultural melting pot of Rotterdam, performing together inside and outside of the university environment.
