Zaatar (thyme) is an unique blend of Makam music roots with jazzy and classical aromas.
The quintet’s musical styles are as diverse as the spice that inspired their name. On the foundation of a jazz rhythm section, the warm and earthy sound of the bass clarinet blends with the new and exciting flavor of the violin.
Zaatar’s players were born in five distinct countries (Cyprus, Belgium, Turkey, Germany, and Syria), and their musical backgrounds are equally diverse: Sebastian, Baris, and Nikolas have degrees in jazz, Anan in Makam-based music, and Lina in Western classical music. Their shared interest is in exploring complex new musical material, such as polyrhythms, odd meters, and new instrumental techniques.
Zaatar investigates the rich intersection of jazz, eastern Mediterranean folk, and classical music, meeting in the vast world of improvisation. Come and be a part of this wonderful evening, with songs from their upcoming album.
