Call it Anything

Call it Anything!

English:
The first working-title Miles Davis used for his studio recordings in
August of 1969 must have stuck with him…
When he was asked, shortly before he went on stage for his
performance on The Isle of Wight (1970), how to call his music, he
replied: “Call it anything!”
After heavy editing of those recordings they became widely known, of course as “Bitches Brew”: released in March of 1970.
Spring 2026.
The time and opportunity had come for pianist Bram Stoeken and bass
player Dennis van Vondelen to realize their long-kept wish: gather
musicians to re-create and re-experience (the spirit) of Miles’ music
from exactly that period (1969-1973).
And they did so with not just anyone!
First one to call was guitar player Richard Sluijk. With roots in metal
and a degree specialized in Thelonious Monk? A perfect match.
On sax: Ferry Luiten. By his own account, he had “been waiting 40
years for this project.” Now he can and is going wild.
Arendo Marijnus takes his place behind the drum kit. He, too,
flawlessly combines the raw, “out-for-blood” attitude of the metal
genre with an avant-garde jazz vocabulary.
It is not a carbon copy of “The Lost Quintet”, “A Tribute to Jack
Johnson” or “Bitches Brew” but it does capture the intensity,
adventurous drive, and improvisational character of this period.
